Hebrew Names of GOD, Jesus and the Holy Spirit - YHWH

1. God (Elohim, Yahweh, Adonai, etc.)

The Bible uses multiple names for God in Hebrew, each revealing different aspects of His nature:

  • אֱלֹהִים (Elohim) – "God" (Plural form, signifying majesty and power)
  • יְהוָה (YHWH / Yahweh) – "The LORD" (The personal, covenant name of God, meaning "I AM")
  • אֵל שַׁדַּי (El Shaddai) – "God Almighty"
  • אֲדֹנָי (Adonai) – "Lord" or "Master"
  • יְהוָה יִרְאֶה (Yahweh Yireh) – "The LORD will provide" (Genesis 22:14)
  • יְהוָה רֹפְאֶךָ (Yahweh Ropheka) – "The LORD who heals" (Exodus 15:26)
  • יְהוָה צִדְקֵנוּ (Yahweh Tzidkenu) – "The LORD our righteousness" (Jeremiah 23:6)

Why different names?
Each name reveals a different aspect of God's character and relationship with His people. For example, Yahweh is His personal name, while Elohim emphasizes His power as the Creator.

2. Jesus (Yeshua - יֵשׁוּעַ)

  • יֵשׁוּעַ (Yeshua) – "Salvation" or "Yahweh Saves"

Why different names?
"Yeshua" is the Hebrew name of Jesus, meaning "salvation." In Greek, it was transliterated as Ἰησοῦς (Iēsous), which later became "Jesus" in English. His name reflects His mission: to save people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).

3. Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh - רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ)

  • רוּחַ (Ruach) – "Spirit," "Breath," or "Wind"
  • הַקֹּדֶשׁ (HaKodesh) – "The Holy"

Together, רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ (Ruach HaKodesh) means "The Holy Spirit" or "The Holy Breath".

Why different names?
In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit is often referred to simply as "Ruach" (Spirit), representing God's breath or life-giving power. In the New Testament, He is more clearly revealed as the personal and active presence of God, guiding and empowering believers.

About Bible Bytes

At Bible Bytes, I explore the Word of God, breaking down key scriptures, messages, and biblical concepts to deepen my understanding—and hopefully help others along the way. While I write many of these reflections myself, I also make use of AI to assist with summarising, explaining, and organising certain passages and themes.

AI is simply a tool to support my study, but my faith and personal interpretation remain at the heart of everything I share. My goal is to make biblical principles more accessible, thought-provoking, and relevant to everyday life. I encourage you to engage with the content, reflect on the Word for yourself, and grow in your own faith journey.

Blessings,
Nicus
